10 1842 Calcutta/Kolkata–London,England Letter via Falmouth/Aberfala per SS Cleaopatra of EIC & SS Oriental of POSNC 1842 Calcutta/Kolkata–London,England letter, posted on Dec 16,1842, with Giles SD12 (ex-CS20)/Lowe HS381 tripartite octagonal Paid dispatch mark in red of Calcutta/Kolkata GPO, impressed on mail sent via Bombay/Mumbai and Suez/As Suways to Alexandria/Al Iskandariyyah overland route even though British steam postage could not be prepaid in India, Giles SD16 (ex-CX8)/Lowe HS385 oblong mark of Calcutta/Kolkata, and London cds dt. 10 FB 1840. The letter was charged 1/ (1sh) packet postage due, entered in manuscript (an offset impression from wet ink from another letter is there at the right of SD12), for weight upto 14.18gm (½oz), sent via Falmouth/Aberfala which was principal port of arrival of India mail carried by British packet to England till 1843 when it was replaced by Southampton. The letter was carried by EIC mail steamer SS Cleopatra which departed from Bombay/Mumbai on Jan 2,1843, reached Aden/ʿAdan on Jan 11, Suez/As Suways on Jan 19, then sent overland to Alexandria/Al Iskandariyyah from where it was carried by Peninsular and Oriental Steamship Company mail paddle steamer SS Oriental (ex-SS United States of Transatlantic Steamship Company) on Jan 23, which reached Valletta on Jan 28, departed from there on Jan 29, reached Gibraltar on Feb 4 and Falmouth/Aberfala on Feb 10. ₹13,000.00 Click here

Jany 1828 15 (month, last two year digits and date entered in manuscript) of Calcutta, Robertson In3 oblong INDIA LETTER mark of Portsmouth, double-circular receipt mark dt. 9 JU 9 1828 in red of London, rectangular ½ penny Scottish additional mail tax stamp for carriage by stage coach with more than two wheels, and double-circular datestamp dt. JUNE 11 1828 in red of Dunkeld. The letter was first marked 1/2 (1s2d), then struck out and reentered 1/7 (1s7d) non-packet rate via the Cape route. This Giles 2 Midnapore mark is the latest recorded used by Giles in Catalogue of Handstruck Postage Stamps of India (1989), the earliest recorded used being in 1818 to London, was the lot 155 in the Soli F Contractor Coll. JEDDO on 29th and , transited Aden between 7 to 9th December, reached Suez on 17 December, sent to Alexandria via Railway & there loaded onto P&O British Packet S.S. RIPON, transited through Malta on 20-21th, reached Marseilles on 23th December finally delivered at Bedford on 26th December 1864, Sharnbrook cds dt. DE 26 64 also applied. Sender's endorsements, "On Service" and "2As" on the front side. 1870 Envelope franked with QV ½A (SG 55) x 2, 2A (SG 62) & 4A (SG 69), this letter was overpaid with 1A by the sender as at that time 6A was correct postal rate to send a letter weighing up to ½ oz. via Southampton route to U.K., sender's endorsement "Via Bombay & Southampton/ Sd. 7as.", sent from Rawalpindi after obliterating the adhesives with Cooper type 9 (RAWUL PINDEE, 48) duplex cancellation and sent to Bombay, reached there and circular transit post mark Giles X11 with dropped slug "5" (in date) "EX/BOMBAY/25 NO./73" (Red) applied, then loaded onto P&O British Packet S.S. CHINA on 27 Nov. & left from Bombay, transited through Suez on 10 December, arrived at Brighton via Malta, Gibraltar & Southampton & delivered to the recipient on 24 Dec. 1870. "Rawul Pindee 20 Nov/ Recd. at Hazelmere Brighton /Day 1870" written in blue by the recipient or someone else later (after delivery) on the front side. Scarce. 1867 Envelope, franked with QV 6A8P (SG 72), sent from Banda after obliterating with Cooper type 9 (45, Banda) cancellation and sent to Wimborne, UK via Bombay & Marseilles route. Sender's endorsement "Via Bombay & Marseilles" on the top. "INDIA PAID" post mark in Red most likely applied at Banda. Transited through Talegaon Dhamdhere and in T.P.O. extremely scarce ISC Type 14/ Renouf Type 113/Cooper type 21a "No 2/C.P./RAILWAY OFFICE " sorting post mark applied on reverse side. On 29th December transit postmark in Red applied at Bombay (Giles X11) and was loaded onto the P&O British Packet S.S. COLUMBIAN, continued its journey, passed through Aden on 4-5th January before reaching Suez on 10th.Subsequently, the letter carried to Alexandria via railway and loaded onto P&O British Packet S.S. TANJORE on 12th, passed through Malta on 15th & reached Marseilles on 18th, finally delivered at Wimborne on 20th January. The postal tariff of 6A8P was correctly paid as per the single rate postage for letters weighting up to ½oz. i.e. 14.17 gm sent from India to U.K. via Bombay and Marseilles route from 1 June '63 to 1 April '68. Scarce. 1874 Entire letter, franked with Queen Victoria 1A (SG 59), 4A (SG 70), and 8A (SG 74) stamps, paying the double letter rate for wt. between ½ oz to 1oz. to Italy via Brindisi (contains one encloser), sent from Madras to Genova. The letter was forwarded by Arbuthnot & Co. Madras, their preventive mark applied. The stamps were then cancelled at Madras G.P.O. using the Cooper type 32 (M-1, Madras) duplex cancellation. The letter transited through Bombay (received Bombay outward cds) on 18th September and was loaded onto the P&O S.S. Gwalior. Onboard the ship, the "SEA POST OFFICE/F" (Proud D5) sorting postmark was applied. The letter continued its journey, passing through Aden before reaching Suez on 3rd October. Acerboni & Co. of Calcutta, and their cachet was applied twice to tie the adhesives as preventive mark as well as name stamp (in bottom left). Reached Bombay on 17th February (transit pmk. “OUT W./BOMBAY/17 FEB” applied) and loaded on P&N British Packet S.S. Surat. Sorted on board of the ship and Proud type D5 “SEA/POST OFFICE/(B)/17 FEB” Sortr set B postmark applied there on the same day. Reached Suez on 1st March. The cover was posted and the stamp canceled most likely while in the Indian Ocean water. The cover was addressed to Mildred Alice Steward Hotson, wife of John Ernest Buttery Hotson (1877–1944) who was the Acting Governor of Mumbai in 1931 when this cover was sent. J Hotson was a prominent philatelist specializing in Br. India and Iran stamps, the Editor of The Philatelic Journal of India (1923–28) and the President of The Philatelic Society of India (1931–42), whose philatelic collection except Iran which was stolen, is now in a museum in Edinburgh.
